Where do I even begin?
I first met Athena when we both attended the Ocean City Christian School. It was 6th grade, she was new to the school, and she sat right behind me in Reading class. At first I didn’t really talk to her and I realize now that is wasn’t because I didn’t like her but because I was absolutely intimidated by her. I was pretty shy and she had a confidence and boldness about her that, well to be quite honest, scared me! Not to mention she was incredibly beautiful. So a few weeks after the school year started, Athena and I were assigned to work on a book project together. I can’t really remember the details but ever since that moment we were inseparable. And when I say inseparable I mean it. We used to hug each other goodbye every day in 8th grade before heading off to class because we knew we wouldn’t see each other all day…(what were we thinking!?) I can honestly say I would not be who I am today and where I am today if it wasn’t for her. When we both moved over to public school, Athena convinced me to try out for the cheerleading team with her… needless to say those were some of the best four years of my life and I am so glad she pushed me to do something completely out of my comfort zone. If it wasn’t for Athena I may not even be married to my husband Drew. It was a snowy night on December 27, 2004 when Drew asked me to be his girlfriend… It was in Athena’s backyard at midnight and the only reason he got the courage to do it was because Athena said, “Drew, just go outside with Sarah and ask her to be your girlfriend already!”. So thanks for that : )
Originally when writing this blog post I started to recap our entire friendship… but then I realized that was almost 15 years of memories and that was a bit much! (Ill save that for my MOH speech : ) So to try and make a long story short, I love this girl. She is my best friend in the entire world and even though we seem to be opposite on every single spectrum : ) she is still my person.
Now to finally get to the whole point of this blog post… A couple years ago, Athena called me while she was living in western Maryland. She was having a bad day and at the end of the phone call she said, “I just want to find a tall, handsome, tan, Greek man to come into my life! Is that too much to ask!?” Well this is no exaggeration when I say, it was only a couple weeks later when I received a text from Athena that read in all caps “I THINK I FOUND HIM”. Needless to say, it was Shawn and she had found the man of her dreams. Over the next year I watched their relationship grow and I have never seen Athena so happy. These two were made for each other and I am so excited to see them become husband and wife this upcoming year. And in all seriousness, I can’t wait until they have babies, because those are going to be some good looking kids!
Athena and Shawn, you both know that I could make this blog post a novel but I need to save some material for my speech : ) Thank you guys (and Bella) so much for spending one of the most beautiful summer nights with me. Watching you two during our shoot gave me butterflies and made my heart so happy. Your love and affection for each other comes natural and with such ease. That's when you know two people are meant to spend the rest of their lives together.
